Week 4 Graded Discussion_Media Impact on Stereotypes

Q Researchers have long strived to quantify the impact that mass media, included TV shows, movies, music videos, etc... have on stereotypes. Here is a humorous Daily Show video that explored whether a comedy TV show could improve public perception of Muslims. Note, this video was created before the Bill Cosby sexual assault and rape accusations became a constant news story. Click on the CC on the video to read the captions, which have a slight delay. http://www.cc.com/video-clips/8p657x/the-daily-show-with-jon-stewart-allah-in-the-family (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. For example, you might choose college-age woman, Latino man, atheist or Buddhist, etc 1. Which group did you choose? 2. Research and find one positive specific media portrayal of your group. It could be in a movie, TV show, music video, advertising, website, video game, etc... Describe that positive portrayal for your classmates and cite the source. 3. 1. I chose men (hard to believe, but more or less equally objectified as women) I have a feeling that when it comes to marketing and pocketing the bucks, both men and women can go to any extent to portray and be portrayed as “objects” for the sake of commerce (No offense). 2. Well, I couldn’t resist sharing both the ads from Dove that move away from stereotypical images of men as rash, loud, insensitive beings and show them as the caring, sensitive, loving, caring, and “always there” members of the family. As much as mothers mean to the children and the family, fathers hold that special position too, have that special bond, and most importantly show it.
